Type Days Ljubljana 2020

Type Days Ljubljana 2020

Type Days Ljubljana 2020
(19 – 22 March, +MSUM, Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, Ljubljana)

Intensive type design workshop, located in the Museum of Contemporary Art, Ljubljana, Slovenia. The workshop is going to focus on the letterings and typefaces from stamps, designed in Yugoslavia. We are going to develop so called body typefaces with the targeting usage – small sizes.

As usually we start the workshop fully hands-on and kick off with drawing the letters. Further on we continue building a firm concept for a typeface. Later, each participant will work on his/her individual typeface in a digital environment.

Methods and techniques
Along basic and advanced lectures on type design you get known with basic lettering, drawing skills and developing the concept of the typeface. You will be guided step by step throughout the digital workflow: scan preparation, correct vector paths, curve optimisation, automated tasks and prototyping the font.

Daily routine
Thu – Sun, we start our day with a morning coffee or tea at 10.00. A lecture with demonstration at 10.15, lunch break at 13.00, individual work during the day and group consultations.

This year our mentors are Alja Herlah and Krista Likar from Slovenian foundry Type Salon. Alja holds MA from Graphic and Interactive Communications where she focused on designing non-Latin typefaces. After the graduation she broaden her skills as Font Developer at Atlas Fonts, Berlin and Font Developer at DaltonMaag, London. She is currently working as a Teaching Assistant at Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Ljubljana and co-founder of type foundry Type Salon. Krista is an experienced Slovenian graphic designer, focusing on type design and lettering. As a participant, she became involved in type design at the Tipo Brda workshops, and later became an active member and organiser of workshops and lectures (2016–). Also a co-founder of Type Salon she strives to convey the voice of the rich type design heritage into the current time and letter shapes of the present today.

Who can participate?
Students of graphic design, typography, architecture and all other people with some basic experience with type design or calligraphy. Our agenda is to connect people with different skills and backgrounds. You are welcome to bring your own ideas and sketches.
